Diplomatic Exchange Follows U.S. Ambassador’s China Remarks in Dhaka
IPW Report: New York, January 28, 2026
During his first interaction with the Bangladeshi press, newly appointed U.S. Ambassador Brent T. Christensen outlined Washington’s position on Bangladesh’s upcoming national election while also commenting on wider regional dynamics, including China’s role in South Asia.
The ambassador stated that the United States does not favor any particular political party or outcome and is prepared to work with any government that comes to power through the electoral process. He emphasized that decisions regarding Bangladesh’s future leadership rest solely with its citizens.
At the same briefing, Ambassador Christensen addressed questions about China’s growing presence in the region, noting that the United States remains attentive to how external influence may affect long-term regional stability. He indicated that Washington believes countries should carefully consider the strategic implications of deepening ties with major powers, including China.
These comments drew a swift reaction from the Chinese Embassy in Dhaka, which issued a formal statement rejecting the U.S. ambassador’s remarks. The embassy described the comments as inappropriate and argued that cooperation between China and Bangladesh is based on mutual benefit, respect, and the independent choices of the two countries. It stressed that bilateral relations should not be judged or questioned by outside actors.
Chinese officials further asserted that China’s engagement with Bangladesh has contributed positively to the country’s development and that such cooperation does not target any third party.
The exchange highlights the broader geopolitical sensitivities surrounding Bangladesh, particularly as it approaches a national election. While the United States has sought to underscore its neutral stance on domestic politics, China has signaled its firm opposition to external commentary on its role in the country. Together, the responses reflect Bangladesh’s growing strategic importance amid intensifying global competition in South Asia.
