IPW Desk, Dhaka, New York, December 20, 2025
The United States Senate has approved the appointment of Brent Christensen as the new Ambassador of the United States to Bangladesh. He is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on January 11.
According to local time, the US Senate confirmed Christensen’s nomination last Friday (December 19), officially endorsing him as the 18th US Ambassador to Bangladesh. Christensen later confirmed the approval through a post on the professional networking platform LinkedIn, where he said he was honored by the Senate’s confirmation and expressed deep gratitude to President Trump for the opportunity.
According to information available on the US Department of State website, Christensen is a senior officer of the US Foreign Service. He has previous experience working in Bangladesh, having served as Political and Economic Counselor at the US Embassy in Dhaka from 2019 to 2021.
The most recent US Ambassador to Bangladesh was Peter Haas, who served from March 2022 to April 2024. Since the conclusion of his tenure, the US mission in Dhaka has been led by a series of Chargés d’Affaires, with retired diplomat Tracey Ann Jacobson serving as mission chief since January.
Christensen’s nomination was first announced by the White House on September 2, 2025, as part of a broader reshuffle of diplomatic appointments. His extensive international experience includes postings in Manila, San Salvador, Riyadh and Ho Chi Minh City. His arrival is expected to bring renewed stability to US–Bangladesh relations ahead of Bangladesh’s national election scheduled for February 2026.
