Why US and UK Advisories Focus on Bangladesh’s Hill Tracts Ahead of Elections
IPW Commentary, New York, January 27, 2026
As Bangladesh approaches its upcoming elections, the United States and the United Kingdom have issued travel advisories specifically targeting the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) region, including Rangamati, Khagrachari, and Bandarban. Citizens are urged to exercise caution, avoid large gatherings, and monitor local developments.
The advisories do not apply to the country as a whole, raising questions about why the focus is on this hilly southeastern region. Historically, the CHT has experienced sporadic violence, criminal activity, and political tensions, which may flare up during politically sensitive periods. Ethnic minority communities in the area and long-standing local disputes contribute to a complex security environment that differs from the rest of Bangladesh.
While neither the US nor UK embassies have reported any immediate threats, the selective warnings suggest that authorities are monitoring regions with a higher potential for unrest, rather than issuing a blanket advisory for the entire country. Analysts note that such targeted advisories are often precautionary measures aimed at minimizing risks for foreign visitors during times of local tension.
